What’s better than French fries?

French fries served with a variety of dipping sauces, of course!

If you’re a sauce lover, then you should never settle for French fries with just ketchup. There’s nothing wrong with ketchup – but fries can be so much more with the right dipping sauce.

Today I’m sharing a bunch of dipping sauce ideas for French fries. Most of these are also suitable for sweet potato fries. You can use frozen fries or make them yourself:

Clockwise, from top left:

  • Cilantro-lime mayonnaise: One of my favorite restaurants (Brasa in St. Paul) serves a tangy, creamy sauce with their yucca fries. I was thrilled when I discovered the chef posted the recipe online! (Reduce the amount of water just a bit to make this sauce thicker and better suited for dipping.)
  • Bacon mayonnaise: Try this dipping sauce on your cheat day. Simply mix some bacon bits (purchased off off the grocery store salad bar, of course) with some mayonnaise.
  • Peanut sauce: I made a basic peanut sauce by blending 1/3 cup of chunky peanut butter, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 teaspoon of sriracha sauce, 1 teaspoon of brown sugar, and some chicken broth to thin it out.
  • Sriracha-mayonnaise: I use this sauce on everything – not just french fries. Mix desired amount of sriracha sauce with mayonnaise, depending on how spicy you like it. Add a pinch of sugar, if desired.
  • Spicy ketchup: Adding sriracha sauce to ketchup totally changes the flavor. The heat level is pretty intense, so start by adding a few drops of sriracha and go from there.
  • Curry mayonnaise: Eating fries with this dip makes me feel like I’m on vacation in India, sampling some exotic street food. Mix curry powder with mayonnaise and add a pinch of sugar to sweeten it up.
  • Curry-honey glaze: If you like a little sweet with your salty, try this dip: Mix a teaspoon of curry powder with 1/4 cup of honey.

Other French Fry Dipping Sauces

Mayonnaise-based sauces:

  • Salsa golf: This popular Argentinian sauce is a simple mix of mayonnaise and ketchup, with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Think Thousand Island dressing without the relish.
  • Chipotle mayonnaise: Mix adobo sauce from a can of chipotle peppers with mayonnaise.
  • Pesto mayonnaise: Mix prepared pesto with mayonnaise for a flavorful green-hued sauce.
  • Comeback sauce: This sauce is good on practically everything: Burgers, sandwiches, chicken tenders, wedge salad – and of course, French fries! Get the comeback sauce recipe.
  • Horseradish mayonnaise: Add a small amount of prepared horseradish to mayo.
  • Wasabi mayonnaise: Add a small amount of wasabi paste to mayo.

Sweet dipping sauces:

  • Honey-mustard: Make your own or just use honey-mustard salad dressing.
  • Raspberry ketchup: Try making homemade ketchup with a raspberry kick.
  • Sweet chili sauce: Find it in the international section of the grocery store or make it yourself.
  • Sriracha-honey glaze: Mix one part sriracha sauce with one part honey. This one starts out tame – then the spice hits you!

Other sauces:

  • Ranch dressing: No shame!
  • Sri-rancha sauce: Sriracha sauce mixed with ranch dressing.
  • BBQ sauce: This BBQ sauce just takes 5 minutes to make.
  • Hot sauce: For those who like their fries spicy.
  • Bearnaise sauce: Very rich and indulgent. Get the recipe here.
  • Gochujang sauce: This fermented Korean condiment is sweet and spicy, and can be used as a fry sauce.
  • Herbed sour cream: Add fresh herbs (like chives, scallions, and dill) to sour cream, as well as some salt and garlic powder.
  • Homemade nacho cheese sauce: You can make your own cheese sauce at home very easily – with everyday, real food ingredients.

But Wait… There’s More!
